BIG CREEK
5-6 Day Remote Backpack & Float Combination Trip
An unusual population of large and healthy native cutthroat trout can be found on Big Creek, a major tributary to the Middle Fork of the Salmon. The Big Creek watershed is part of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, a vast 2.3 million acres of untamed land.
We have fished very successfully using dry flies such as varied stimulators, elk hair and goddard caddis, royal wulff, trudes, parachute adams and the ever popular turks tarantula. All fishing is catch and release. Wildlife sightings are also an exciting feature of this adventure. On this trip we regularly see moose, bear, elk, big horn sheep, chukar, blue grouse & bald eagles.
We arrive in the Big Creek Drainage by airplane at the Cabin Creek airfield located 14 miles above its confluence with the Middle Fork. There are numerous riffles and deep pools along this section of Big Creek that hold fish in the 15 – 22″ range. The hiking trail is in excellent condition and facilitates access to the water. At the confluence of Big Creek and The Middle Fork, additional guides and rafts pick us up. We spend the last day floating and fishing through the Middle Fork’s Impassable Canyon.
FISHING EQUIPMENT
We recommend fly rods in the 2 – 5 weight range, with reels, lines, flies, leaders, flotant & a fishing vest or bag.
